Day 2 - Matosinhos to Vila Cha
We left Casa Rietsch around 8:30 to start our walk. We are not sure how this happened, but we discovered that what was planned to be about an 8 mile walk turned out to actually be 10.5 miles. Just a minor glitch, right?
Weather was beautiful again, as was the scenery. We walked through a surfing competition which was pretty interesting. Today’s walk was mostly on boardwalks along the Atlantic, and we passed a variety of beach types; from rocky shoreline, to pristine white sand to what looked like tide pools. I have included a few photos below from our day.
Bom Camino! Rich
Sunita here - I am going to tag onto Rich’s post because I am just too tired to even try my own. The only way I was able to complete today was because it was pretty flat and I find the ocean waves to be quite uplifting.
Today was an emotional day for me because it is Mom’s birthday. Her second one in heaven. I played my Mom playlist and felt like I was walking on the shore with her.
The last hour when you are walking to your accommodations for the evening is the hardest. A half a mile feels like 15 miles and it is just so disheartening. The town we are staying in is pretty quiet and we had a hard time finding a place for dinner. We are both so tired and achy that we didn’t want to move an inch. Not gonna lie, I was tempted to look if they have Uber Eats here! Google said that there was a pizza place .6 miles from here so we mustered up the energy to walk there only to find a “closed for holidays” sign. Then we walked another half mile and found a bar but the bartender said “no food”. There was a mini market across the street from the bar that looked pretty dark so I figured it was closed. We ventured over and it was open. Now, this was a tiny little market and had very little in terms of dinner fixings. I saw a couple of pieces of bread in the bottom of the bin and the woman who works there came over and said if you wait a minute, fresh bread will be arriving soon. I thought I was maybe hallucinating but sure enough a man came in with a bin of fresh baked warm bread. I wanted to tell the woman that she was an angel but I chickened out because I wasn’t sure how to pronounce what Google translate was showing. Hopefully she already knows she is an angel.
Ok, two very tired pilgrims are gonna hit the sack. I don’t even want to think about tomorrow…
Adding one pic of bougainvilleas at our hostel last night. Mom’s favorite ❤️
