Sarria to Gonzar, Spain - October 9

Today is the first of three consecutive @20 mile walks. The good thing is that leaves us with a short (12.5 miles) walk into Santiago on Sunday

It was very busy leaving Sarria, as it is a popular starting point for the walk to Santiago because it meets the 100km walking requirement to qualify for the Compostela certificate, and is short enough to be completed in less than a week.

Another advantage of this section of the walk is the frequency of towns and villages along the way and more importantly lots of options in those towns for food and beverages that are open. Up until now, we have found it hit or miss if the bars/cafes are open in many towns probably due to nearing end of season.

We met lots of animals along the way. Galicia is filled with farms separated by beautiful mountain scenery.

We passed the 100km mark after an hour or so which indicates the remaining distance to Santiago - a big milestone considering how far away we started.

Galicia is a region that blends modern Spain and Celtic roots in architecture, culture and other influences. We were fortunate enough to come across a local musician among the walk playing the bag pipes. We could hear the music long before we came to where he was playing, and the sound echoing through the woods was beautiful.

We continued our journey toward Gonzar passing through a number of small villages and beautiful countryside.

We crossed the Rio Mino on our way into Portomarin. The water level was very low, revealing the ruins of a Roman bridge which is normally hidden under water.

We finally arrived at Hosteria de Gonzar where we met Sunita who had ordered dinner for us at the hostel restaurant. She is always so thoughtful 😍.
